Dr. Panicos O. Demetriades is the Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus and member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank.
Before his appointment as Governor in May 2012, he served as Professor of Financial Economics at the University of Leicester, a position held since March 2000. He taught money and banking and financial systems and economic performance.
Prof. Demetriades has published numerous articles in leading academic journals and books. He has presented his research as a keynote speaker at international conferences and seminars at leading universities in Europe, America, Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. He is associate editor of Applied Economics, Economics Letters and Empirical Economics.
Prof. Demetriades has been a consultant to the World Bank, the OECD, the Economic and Social Research Council, and other organisations. During 2002-2005 he was Chairman of the Department of Economics at the University of Leicester. From 1988 until 2008 he was editor of the Cyprus Journal of Economics and Ekonomia. During 2004-2010 he was a member of of the Interim Governing Board of the Cyprus University of Technology. He also served as an Acting Dean of School of Management and Economics at the Cyprus University of Technology from its inception until the end of 2009.
In September 2011, Prof. Demetriades was elected a member of the British Academy of Social Sciences and gained the title of Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS).
Prof. Demetriades holds a BSc and MSc from the University of Essex as well as a Ph.D in economics from the University of Cambridge.
